Update on high school return to learn plans
10/30/2020 -- The below email was sent to high school families today.
We have an important update to share with you on our plans for students attending school in-person and what learning will look like on days at home or in the event of quarantine.
Students will have instruction with teachers when learning from home.
We want to ensure our students have instruction with teachers on days they are learning from home or in the event they are quarantined. Therefore, students will have synchronous learning with teachers and classmates on their days at home. This will look different depending on the high school course and content area.
What students can expect:
- On distance learning days, students will join class via Zoom at the start of each period and attendance will be taken.
- As a reminder, the school day will begin at 7:35 am and end at 2:25 pm. You can see the detailed school day schedule for the second quarter here.
- Teachers will provide instruction and assignments for both students at school and at home. Students at home will be expected to participate in live instruction, learning and group discussions based on the lesson and content.
- Schoology pages for each course will be maintained so students can access assignments and learning materials and continue learning whether in school or at home.
- If a student is quarantined and feeling well enough to participate, they can continue to join class every day via Zoom so their learning is not disrupted.
High school students will continue on a blended schedule through November.
We continue to watch the health data in our community, which are currently trending in a more negative direction. And now that our elementary and middle school students are starting to come to school, we are already seeing some student and staff quarantines required by the St. Louis County Health Department. For our high school students, we know quarantines could be even more disruptive as they are earning course credit in a short quarter. Therefore, high school students will continue on a blended schedule through November with only half of the student body attending school in-person each day.
Mondays are distance learning days online with teachers.
On distance learning days, school starts at 8:40 am and there is no learning support block for both in-person and Virtual Campus students. The rest of the week, students alternate learning at school and home depending on their group. You can see the updated In-Person High School Calendar for November here.
As we approach the holiday season, we know our families and staff may have more gatherings outside of school. So we want to be more cautious about students and staff attending school in-person around holiday breaks. For example, you will see we built in distance learning days at home before and after Thanksgiving.
Our goal remains the same - to bring high school students back to school full time as soon as it is safe to return. We are aware the current health trends may not support a decision to return full time during the second quarter given the very large population of students and staff in our high schools. We will carefully monitor and gather data in the coming weeks and continue to stay in touch with updates as we move forward.

We know that changes in plans and schedules this year have been challenging for everyone so we appreciate your ongoing support and patience as we respond to the most current data and information to make decisions in the best interest of our staff and students.
