    29 May 2022 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

It is hard to believe that we are at the last week of the school year already. Thinking back to August, is difficult to do, as it feels like a long time ago. We have made it and have come out stronger, wiser, and more prepared.

As we prepare to close out this year, I want to thank all of our families, faculty, and staff for their continued support, and commitment to our mission. Truly I am blessed to be able to lead this school and have you all be a part of it. So, thank you again for all that you do and continue to do, as a strong member of the Northeast Middle Jr. Viking family.

To our 8th graders, we look forward to celebrating them on Tuesday during the ceremony and dance. We hope all of our 8th grade scholars will be able to attend the dance on Tuesday at 6:30p-8:30p. Wednesday will be Six Flags (rain or shine) for those that signed up. Please note we will be on Facebook Live for each of the ceremonies.

This will conclude the Viking News for 2021-2022. The next one will be an in July/August. Enjoy your summer and we look forward to returning for 2022-2023 year with many construction projects completed. Some of these projects will continue to increase the safety and security of our building with a new single entryway.

We look forward to ending our school year again with Food Truck Day! This will be on Thursday, June 2nd, during our half day. Check out the menus and options here. Please note, many of the food trucks only accept CASH.

Mrs. Theodosiou has put together a Summer Reading Newsletter. This is a great resource to check out and keep your child engaged with reading over the summer break.

We look forward to ending our school year again with Food Truck Day! This will be on Thursday, June 2nd, during our half day. Menus will be in next week's Viking News. Please note, many of the food trucks only accept CASH.

Although, we don't take a stance, I want to take another opportunity to share some information and research regarding Smartphones and kids. This is a hot topic and a difficult one to navigate. We strongly encourage families to make a decision that is best for them. Research will show kids during these years don't need a Smartphone and the literature is growing about the negative effects social media and unfiltered access is doing to the mind during those critical developmental years. Nationally there is a movement growing called "Wait Unit Eighth," which encourages parents to wait until at least 8th grade to give kids smartphones. Here is a recent clip from the Today Show. We are here to support whatever decision you make that is best for your child and family. Please note scholars aren't to have their cell phones, AirPods/headphones, etc. throughout the entire school day, except during lunch.

With this in mind, our Jr. Viking Leaders have continued the series, This Is Me, This Is Us. I wanted to share the May episode as we head into summer months. This episode is all about managing your image online. If you are interested or have some time, this is a great video to watch and discuss with your child.

    This Is Me

Finally, I want to share last week, we were recognized again by Character Plus as a National and State School of Character. We are proud of this and understand our need to continually reflect and implement systems and structures to help our scholars align all of their actions to our Viking Values.

    1 May 2022 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

Last week was quite a busy week at Northeast Middle school. Here are some highlights...

    • Our NJHS scholars organized a school fundraiser for the United Nations Refugee fund and raised over $3,200.
    • Many scholars performed or participated in the production of Annie, Jr.
    • We were recognized by Cardinals Cares for Excellence in Service Learning at the game on Thursday.

    CardinalsNJHS

With May upon us, the number of events, activities, and sometimes behaviors uptick. We look forward to having more traditional events to end the year. In order to end the year on a high note, we are continuing to remind our scholars of the Viking Values and expectations we have at school. Please note, cell phones / electronics are not allowed to be used outside of lunch time. An initial warning will be provided by the administration and then a parent/guardian would need to pick-up the phone from school. We appreciate your assistance in reminding your child of this expectation.

This month in Community Time, we focused on the Viking Value of responsibility. As we think about our definition: "we own our words and actions. We take initiative and are prepared learners who use time effectively." I encourage all families to have a conversation of how your child may use this value in all of their actions with these remaining weeks of the school year. We look forward to continuing to recognize scholars throughout the weeks who demonstrate the Viking Values.

Lastly, this week is Educator Appreciation Week. We look forward to celebrating our educators throughout the week. One way you can show your appreciation is through supporting the Parkway Alumni Association and purchasing a carwash certificate for a staff member to use at Waterway.

    8th Grade Families

We have heard from some families that they would prefer a more traditional celebration rather than a drive-thru one. Therefore, we are asking for your feedback. Please complete this survey by Wednesday, May 4th. We will use this feedback to help make final plans. There are two options to consider and thank you to those that reached out to help push our decision. In addition, please remember final payments for 8th grade fees (shirt, dance, celebration, Six Flags) is due in Rycor by May 13th. This includes all outstanding fees and fines. Let us know if you have any questions.

    10 April 2022 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

The weather is certainly trying to make its mind up if it is spring or winter still. Here we are with just about eight weeks left of the school year. With that in mind, the end of year, always brings a need to remind everyone about our Viking Values and expectations.

Some reminders for our scholars are that it is important to be on time to their classes, not have any electronic device in sight or use during the school day except during CT or lunch, and appropriately demonstrate our Viking Values (Compassion, Integrity, Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility).

Last week we welcomed nearly 175 incoming 6th grade families for a building tour. It is nice as we continue to work together to be able to bring some more traditional events back to our school community.

Mark your calendars now for Saturday, May 21st will be a Pet Drive and Campus Clean-Up Day from 9a-12p at Northeast Middle School. This would be a great time for any scholars looking for community service hours and/or a time for families to help clean-up outside of the school. More details to come and we thank you in advance.

A group of our scholars in National Junior Honor Society are currently holding a community time contest to raise money for the Ukrainian refugee crisis.

Lastly, for MAP testing, scholars will need headphones that plug into their Chromebooks. These may NOT be AirPods or any other Bluetooth headphones.

    Your Partner in Education,

    Kevin

    6 March 2022 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

I hope this message finds you well. I want to thank Councilwoman Nicole Greer and Dr. Marty for joining us for our National Junior Honor Society induction. The event was a great success and we look forward to continuing to find ways to involve and recognize our scholars for all the great things they do.

As the spring is quickly approaching, many grades and teams will be planning various field trips and events for our scholars. It will be important you have access to your Parent Portal account through Infinite Campus. All permission slips for events will be available through this system only. If you need assistance with your Parent Portal please email ic-parenthelp@parkwayschools.net or call (314) 415-8181, option 2.

The quarter is quickly coming to an end. Now is a great time to check on your child's grades and ensure any missing work is completed.

Research has continued to support the effects social media may have on teenagers particularly. Much of the research finds that 1 in 4 teens are heavy social media users. We know that undoubtedly, social media and cell phones play a vital role in scholars connecting with their peers but also impacts their own mental health. During the middle school years, teens brains are developing rapidly and very vulnerable. Particularly, there is research about the impacts screen time can have on self-regulation, depression, and anxiety. Therefore, we strongly encourage all families to have regular conversations regarding social media, texting, etc. It is important to regularly review your child's phone, messages, and platforms. As a school we are frequently addressing and dealing with concerns that arise from outside the school day and non-school related issues. A suggestion is when your child is struggling with others to block non-friends, delete social media, or don't engage in any conversation if it is not positive or from an unknown user. We must all work together to help our scholars navigate the ever-evolving social media world.

    Have a terrific week ahead.

    Your Partner in Education,

    Kevin
